Life in the 19th Century
In the very beginning of this Century Lewis and Clark became the first Americans to go west and explore all of the features of it, after their expedition people started to leave the east and move west, expanding the U. S. territory. They started to raise their families over in the new land, making it less crowded so more people to live in the U. S.
Things Unique In This Century
Some things about the 19th century were that there was new farming space in the west (Arizona, Utah, Montana, Washington, Idaho, California, and New Mexico). The 1800s was the century introducing the machine tools like light bulb telephone, typewriter and sewing machines were invented by William Whewell (1833). There were many presidents in every century. 40% of the nation's population lived in the trans- Appalachian West. Slavery was not allowed in the new western states. The 19th century war was in the west Fort Donelson, Shiloh Tennessee. The Indians has lots of land in the east but the US government moved them to the west along the Mississippi River known as "The Trail of Tears." Arizona was still New Mexico's territory before 1863 but it was stilled called Arizona.
